Licensed Gas Fitter and/or Oil Burner Mechanic Technician (Journeyperson)

Position Summary:

The Licensed Technician is responsible for the installation, service, maintenance and repairs of Residential Heating and Ventilation equipment. (We see that this will in time become a very limited Trade area as the move to be more cross crafted i.e. sheet metal experience, air conditioning, electrical, ventilation, etc.. The move to the new Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Mechanic Trade Residential sub-component is where we see the Trade heading and Apprentices should place their careers on this path, in our opinion. However, we will still offer Apprenticeships to only Gas Fitting and Oil burner Mechanics if requested by the Apprentice.)

Authority:

The Licensed Technician derives authority from and is directly responsible to the Owners. The Licensed Technician will, from time to time, be directly responsible for an Apprentice or General Helper on the job.

Hours:

Completed the requirements of the Province of Manitoba, completed the in-school requirement and passed the Provincial exam, or has been issued a Provincial License based on another Provincial Trade License qualification being satisfactory to the Manitoba Department of Labour, Mechanical and Engineering requirements.

Qualifications (Education and Experience):

Trade School, High School Vocational or equivalent At least one year HVACR field experience Previous experience troubleshooting electrical and mechanical systems Experience in Refrigeration and Air Conditioning, gas pipe fitting and installations

Responsibilities and Duties:

The major function of the Licensed Technician is to perform all duties assigned to him/her and to assist in the training of Apprentices. The Licensed Technician must constantly seek and attain more knowledge in the practical and technical phases of the business. In addition, further knowledge in the entrepreneurship side and operations phases of the business will enable a Licensed Technician to broaden and better understand the Company and areas of operations (Sales, Services Manager, etc.).

The Licensed Technician is directly responsible for the following:

  1. His/her own deportment on the job.
  2. To complete all work assignments in a safe, neat and professional manner to the best of your ability.
  3. Making those purchases that are required for maintenance and repairs.
  4. Adhering to proper procedures in use of paper work (purchase orders, time cards, work orders, customer equipment information, warranty return tags, etc.).
  5. Keeping in constant contact with the office at all times as to "where he/she is," "where he/she has been," and "where he/she is going."
  6. Coordination with the Owners in matters that the Licensed Technician feels are beyond his/her authority or ability to handle.
  7. Be courteous, clean and neat in uniform at all times.
  8. Assist Apprentices and others in any way possible and be alert in learning new and better procedures of service, maintenance and installation work.
  9. Follow through on problem jobs.
  10. Assign job duties as needed and assign other responsibilities and delegate authority as needed to ensure job speed, quality and the completion date.
  11. Attend both in-house and outside training seminars and courses to remain current with technology. As market conditions change, so must you.
  12. Conduct yourself at all times to reflect a good public image, after all you are not just a Licensed Technician, you are a Senior Statesman for the Company.
  13. To be responsible for the care of assigned Company vehicles, tools, equipment and materials. All vehicles must be maintained in good appearance and mechnical condition. Report any problems (lost or damaged tools, poor brakes, mirrors, etc.) in writing to the office immediately.
  14. Be observant, read, understand and respect all Company rules, policies and procedures.
  15. To report to the office upon completion of job assignments, and at the beginning and end of each day. Ensure that all parts and materials required to complete a job have been ordered and picked up.
  16. To maintain a truck stock of repair parts, tag and return defective parts in warranty to shop, and restock those parts used.
  17. To ensure that the office is given notice when you may require a day off for funerals, doctors, etc.
  18. To be available for after hours emergency service as requested, carry a pager and from time to time take cellular calls.
  19. To maintain a clean, neat and tidy shop. A messy shop, truck, or job site is not only unsafe, it is also not productive.
  20. Report all accidents of any kind to the office the same day.
  21. To keep records, invoice and/or collect payments from customers, fill out warranty information and prepare detailed technical reports.
  22. Gather proper materials and equipment before leaving the shop.
  23. Make sure components installed by us do not interfere with structures of building or other Trades work. Ensure that all codes are adhered to (under no circumstances shall any codes be ignored or building structures be weakened to ease installation).
  24. Notify the office immediately of problems encountered on the job, or if a delay or cancellation results in an increase of unrecoverable costs.
  25. Check equipment for valid warranty dates, extended labour warranties or planned service agreements.
  26. Keep dissatisfied customers confident in both yourself and the Company's abilities to handle their problems satisfactorily.
  27. Communicate verbally with customers and be able to address their questions, concerns, etc.
  28. Maintain a positive mental attitude.
  29. Increase your sales talents.
  30. Design (HVACR) systems, sketch job site drawings and procure material and equipment needed.
  31. Common sense.
  32. Be constantly alert for new business leads.
  33. Follow up on service agreement leads, sales, system service, etc.
  34. Coordinate with the Owners to offer suggestions regarding new ideas (programs, inactive customers, survey, newsletters, etc.).
  35. Responsible for the distribution of all marketing materials, equipment brochures, business cards, promotional materials, and placing of equipment stickers with Company logo and phone numbers on each appliance.

  • Ability to work independently and with managed supervision
  • Good communication and inter personal skills are required (ability to deal diplomatically and effectively with customers)
  • Good mechanical and problem solving ability required
  • Ability to perform in a neat and professional manner
  • Avoid criticizing previous work done in front of the customer
  • Keep a customer's premises clean and respect their property
  • Strong work ethic
  • Average to above average aptitude in mathematics an asset
  • An interest in continued learning and upgrading of skill and knowledge
